VIP Membership
How much does it cost to join 50and?
50and is free to join. Free membership allows you to browse the site, view member profiles and send smiles to other members.
Upgrading your membership to VIP status also offers:
More opportunities to connect with other members by sending and receiving unlimited messages
Use of our one on one chat feature which includes audio and video
Priority customer service attention
Trial VIP membership
Currently, all new members who join 50and will receive a 3 day trial of the VIP features of the site. This provides an opportunity for you to "try, before you buy".
At the completion of the trial period you can stay on as a free member or pay a subscription fee of £19.95 GBP for a 1 month membership to continue connecting with other members.
How do I cancel the Automatic Renewal?
Cancelling the Automatic Renewal is easy. Just go to the Edit My Settings page, then click on the VIP tab and then click on Cancel Automatic Renewal. You will be prompted to enter your password to verify your account and then the Automatic Renewal will be cancelled.
You will still continue to enjoy the benefits of 50and VIP membership until the date you are paid up to.
I cancelled my Automatic Renewal but I want to continue my VIP Membership
Simply click on the Upgrade button at the top left of the page and enter your payment details.
Payment will be taken immediately and an additional 1 month will be added to your VIP Membership.
Activating Membership
To help keep the site secure we ask you to confirm your email address before we activate your membership. Until your membership is activated you will not be able to contact other members or read messages sent to you by other members.
How do I activate my membership?
During the registration process you will be sent an activation email. Once you have received the email, click on the link contained within and your membership will be activated and you are free to interact with other members.
I didn't receive the email. What now?
Check your junk/spam folder for the email.
If the email cannot be found, login to http://50and.com/ and ensure you entered a valid email address during registration by clicking on the Edit My Settings link.
Amend your email address if required and an activation email will be sent to the updated email address .
If the email address is correct and you still haven’t received the activation email, go to http://50and.com/members/confirm_email and have the activation email re-sent. Or try to send someone a message and you will be directed to the Confirm Email page.
Still no email - what should I do?
Click on the Contact link and submit an enquiry. Our team will assist you in the activation process.
Sending and Receiving Messages
How do I send someone a Message?
From the Inbox:
Click on the Messages link to the left of screen
Click on the Create Message button
Start typing a member's name into the To field. If you are unsure, our system will automatically suggest usernames with similar spellings
Choose the member you wish to send the message to
Add a Subject and enter your message
Click Send
From a Member's Profile:
Click on the Send Message button and follow the steps above.
What are conversations?
A series of Messages with the same subject between you and another user are organised into conversations.
What are Stored Messages?
You can store your Received Messages to keep your Received Messages uncluttered.
To store a message, check the box next to the message then click the Store Selected link.
Once you have stored a message you can view it by clicking Stored.
How do I delete messages?
To delete an individual message, click on the x to the right of the message
To delete multiple messages, check the box next to each of the messages you want to delete then click the Delete Selected Messages link
To delete all messages, click the Select All link then click the Delete Selected Messages link
Deleted messages cannot be restored.
What do the envelope icons mean?
Read messages are marked with an open envelope.
Unread messages are marked with a closed envelope.
Why are some subject lines in bold?
Bold messages are unread.
Why are messages I've read showing as unread again?
New messages within the same conversation have been received.
What are Draft Messages?
This folder is where you can save incomplete messages, or messages you have written and want to send at a later date.
How do I save a draft message?
While creating your message, click the Save Draft button instead of the Send button. This will save the message in the Drafts folder.
When you are ready to complete the message and/or are ready to send it, open the Draft folder, click on the message you wish to send, complete it if applicable and then click the Send button.
Sending and Receiving Smiles
How do I send someone a Smile...or a Wink, Kiss, Slap?
From the Inbox:
Click on the Smiles link to the left of screen.
Start typing the member's username in the To field. Our system will automatically suggest usernames with similar spellings.
Select the correct username, click on the smile type you wish to send and then click on the Send button.
From a Member's Profile:
Click on the Send Smile button and follow the steps above
Notifications
What are Notifications?
Notifications are generated when a new member who matches your "looking for" criteria joins 50and.
To change the criteria used to notify you of new members, click on Edit My Settings and the My Hub tab.
Notifications are also generated when you add someone to your Likes list and they add you to theirs.
To dismiss notifications, click on the x or the Dismiss All link
Requests
What are Requests?
Requests are sent from another member wanting to confirm their friendship with you.
A request is generated when a member goes to your profile and clicks on Add to Friends.
To confirm a friend request, click on the Accept button
To dismiss the request, click on the x or the Dismiss All link
Edit Profile
How do I edit my profile?
Click on Edit my Profile and then the Description tab to edit your profile information
Click the Save button to record your changes
My Photo
How do I Add a Profile Photo?
Before you add a photo to your profile, please read our photo guidelines
Click on the My Photo link to the left of your screen
Click on the Browse button to locate and attach your photo. Your photo must be in .jpg (jpeg) format and less than 2mb in file size
Click on the Add Profile Photo button to upload the photo
Choose who can see your photo: All members or Only members you choose, by clicking on the edit link next to Privacy Settings
Publishing any offensive material will result in your account being cancelled.
How many photos can I upload?
You can upload one photo, so make sure it's a good one!
What kind of photo can I upload?
Your photo should be a headshot rather than a full body shot so that it gives other members a clear view of your face. Check the photo guidelines for more information about what your photo can and cannot contain.
Your photo must be below 2mb and in .jpg format.
Am I required to upload a photo to my profile?
You are not required to upload a photo to your profile, however if you do not upload a photo you will not appear on the list of members on the Hub page. This means other members won't be able to find you.
Displaying a photo attracts a lot more interest from other members.
How do I choose which members can see my photo?
Check the Allow this member to see my Profile Photo box when sending another member a message
What are the photo guidelines?
Please upload a photo which is:
Of your face rather than a full body shot
Not too small or taken from too far away (your facial features should be distinguishable)
Recent (taken within the last 2 years)
Of good quality (not too dark, fuzzy, blurry or overexposed)
In jpeg (.jpg or jpeg) format and under 2mb in size
An actual photograph of you (not a likeness or a graphic/cartoon image)
In original format (not overly manipulated or distorted)
Photos must not contain:
Nudity, semi-nudity, sexually explicit or sexually suggestive content
Web links, contact details or other identifying information
Rude or obscene gestures
Anyone else – the photo must be of you only
Photos that do not adhere to these guidelines will result in your account being deleted.
Edit My Settings
How do I change my Username?
Click on the Edit My Settings link to the left of screen
Enter your current username in the Current Username field
Enter your new username in the Enter New Username field
Click on the Change Username button to save your new password
For security, we ask you to enter your current password before saving these changes
Is there a limit to the number of times I can change my username?
There is no limit, however changing your username multiple times may confuse other members
How do I change my Password?
Click on the Edit My Settings link to the left of screen
Enter your current password in the Current Password field
Enter your new password in the Enter New Password field below then verify it in the last field
Click on the Change Password button to save your new password
I've forgotten my password, what should I do?
In the Edit My Settings page, under Account click on the "Forgot your Password?" link
On the Recover Details page enter the email address you used to join and you will be sent an email to re-set your password
You can also access the Recover Details page from the Login page
How do I change my Email Address?
Click on the Edit My Settings link to the left of screen
Enter your current email address in the Current Email field
Enter your new email address in the field below then verify it in the last field
Click on the Change Email button to save your new password
For security, we ask you to enter your current password before saving these changes
How do I change my Location?
Click on the Edit My Settings link to the left of screen
Start typing your new location in the Enter New Location field
Choose your location from the dropdown list which appears
Click on the Change Location button to save your location
Changing your location will change the members you see on the Hub page.
How do I Delete my 50and account?
If you have logged in, click on Edit My Settings and scroll down to Leave 50and and click on the Delete my account link Otherwise, click on the Contact link at the bottom of the page, select the Delete Account form and send us a request
Emails from 50and
How do I choose which emails I receive from 50and?
Click on the Edit My Settings link to the left of screen
Click on the Email tab
You can opt in or out of the emails sent by 50and by making the relevant selection and clicking on the Save Settings button
Privacy
How can I keep my photo private?
You can choose to show your profile photo to All members, or just to Members you choose:
Click on the Edit my Settings link to the left of screen
Click on the Privacy tab
Select the privacy option that you desire
You can change your privacy options at any time
I want to keep my list of Friends private. How do I do this?
You can choose to show your Friends List to All members or to Friends Only:

Select the privacy option that you desire
You can change your privacy options at any time
I don't want to appear as Online Now, how do I turn this off?
Click on the Edit My Settings link to the left of screen
Click on the Privacy tab
Look for the Online Now section
Select No and you won't show as online
Select Yes and your profile will be marked as online each time you login
How do I Block another member and what happens when I block someone?
Click the Block Member button on the member's full profile.
If you block a member they will not be able to view your profile, send you messages or smiles or add you to their Friends or Likes.
If the member is on your Friends or Likes they will be removed from those lists and you will be removed from their lists if applicable.
The member will not be notified that you have blocked them however if they are unable to view your profile or interact with you they may assume that you have blocked them
What happens if a member I have blocked tries to reply to a message I sent them previously?
The Reply button will appear inactive and a note will inform them that they are unable to reply as they have been blocked
How do I know who I have blocked and how do I unblock someone?
Click on the Edit My Settings link and then click on the Privacy tab. You will see the section called Blocked Members
View the list of members you have blocked here
Click the Unblock link next to the member's name
If they were previously on your Friends or Likes list, they will not be reinstated to these lists when you unblock them.
Friends
What is the Friends list?
This is where you can see a list of your friends so you can communicate with them quickly and easily and find out what they've been up to!
How do I add a member to my Friends List?
Click on the member's username to see their full profile
Click on the Add to Friends button
A request will be sent to the other member to confirm your friendship
If the member confirms the request they will appear on your Friends List and you will appear on their list.
If the member rejects the request you will not be notified, they simply will not be added to your Friends List or you to theirs.
Is there a limit to the number of friends I can have on my list?
No, there are no limits to the number of Friends you can add to your list. The more the merrier!
How is my Friends List ordered?
Your friends will be listed in order of last login, with the most recent logins at the top.
Will other members know who my friends are?
Manage who can see your friends by clicking on the Edit My Settings link on the left hand side of the page and then the Privacy tab. You can show them to everyone or just your friends.
How do I remove a member from my Friends List?
Click on the Friends link at the top of the page
Click on the x to the right of the member's username to remove them
The member will not be notified, they simply will no longer appear on your list of Friends and you will no longer appear on their list.
Friends Activity
What is Friends Activity?
This is where you can see what your friends have been up to on the site, whether they have confirmed some friendships, changed why they're here, uploaded a new photo and more!
Likes
What is Likes for?
Likes are people that interest you for whatever reason that you want to keep track of. You might like the way they look, or their profile might be really interesting. You can contact people on this list quickly and easily if you want to.
How do I add a member to my Likes list?
Click on the member's username to view their full profile
Click on the Add to Likes link
Members added to your Likes list are not notified unless there is a match and you add each other.
What happens if I add someone to my Likes and they add me to theirs?
Both you and the member will be notified that there is a mutual match.
If you remove the member from your Likes they will not be notified.
How do I delete members from Likes?
Open your Likes page
Click on the x to the right of the member's username
The member will not be notified
Chat
What is chat?
Chat is the instant messenger service on 50and which means you can send and receive messages to and from another member instantaneously. You can type or you can use the audio visual features to see and hear each other.
How do I make myself available for Chat?
After logging in, select yes in the left hand chat menu to make yourself available for chat.
If you choose yes, the chat icon on your profile will be active and other members can click on it to start chatting with you.
How do I initiate a Chat?
To start chatting with another member, the chat icon on their profile needs to be active to show that they are available for chat.
The chat box will pop-up on your page and when you start typing the chat box will pop-up on their page also for them to respond.
How can I tell if the member I'm chatting to has received my message?
Messages are transferred as soon as you send them. If you are making a new connection to a user, you will receive a notice indicating that the chat window is now open on the other member's computer and they have received the message.
This does not guarantee that they have read the message, but simply that they have received the transfer.
Can I change the way the text looks?
Yes, simply click on the button with the T and this will present you with underline, italics, or bold options.
How do I send a smiley face?
Click on the smiley face icon near the bottom of the window and other icons will appear for you to choose from, including happy, sad and embarrassed faces
How do I use audio and video to Chat?
Firstly, ensure you have a camera correctly installed on your computer. Most recent computers have a camera built-in which is compatible with our chat software.
Ensure your speaker and microphone volume is set to a suitable level.
To start the video/audio chat, click on the 'show a/v' (audio/video) button located in the bottom right corner of the chat window. This will open up the lower pane of the window, and you will be asked to allow the use of your audio and video devices – check the "allow" button then close this window.
If video is set to 'off' click on it once to turn on your video. Do the same with audio.
Once you have connected, you will be able to view the video you are sending in this lower pane.
The other member will need to do the same for you to see their video and hear their audio
You may opt to hide your a/v by clicking the 'hide a/v' button.
How do I mute all audio?
You may mute all incoming audio by clicking on the 'mute audio' button in the message window (it looks like a speaker).
How do I send a 'kiss'
Click the arrow in the top right and select 'kiss' from the options available.
How do I send a 'smack'
Click the arrow in the top right and select 'smack' from the options available
